We all want to do our part to help the environment, but sometimes our budgets simply don’t allow it. Here are some eco-friendly changes you can make around your home that won’t break the bank.

Smart Thermostats

Have you ever realized how crazy it is to leave the heat on after you vacate the house? That’s a bit like our ancestors cutting down all the neighborhood trees to heat an empty cave. Most people have access to technology that allows them to program thermostats to shut off at certain times of day and therefore reduce energy waste. But the traditional programmable thermostat can only do so much.

The Nest, by contrast, is a smart thermostat capable of learning your behavior and modifying its settings accordingly.5 If you come home from work and typically adjust your thermostat to 70 degrees Fahrenheit and then dial it down to 65 degrees at bedtime, the Nest eventually catches on and makes the change for you. And when you leave the house, it automatically turns itself down.

It has other impressive features too. For example, when the Nest “sees” you approaching, it automatically illuminates itself so the screen is easier to read. It can also be controlled remotely so you can adjust the temperature of your home via a cellphone or laptop.

The Nest, which was designed by former Apple engineers and is owned by Google, is a fairly pricey device at $250. But it’s absolutely worth the investment. And if you think you have insufficient expertise to replace an existing thermostat, the company offers straightforward installation tutorials that should boost your confidence.6

For a little bit less money (and, dare we say, style), there are several other smart thermostats on the market. Honeywell’s Wi-Fi Smart Thermostat, for example, won’t learn your temperature habits, but if you have different temperature preferences for different times of the day, it allows you to program them down to the hour for up to seven days.7 It has a user-friendly screen, is easy to set up, and features the kind of built-in flexibility most homeowners appreciate. Plus, this device acts as a small weather station that provides indoor and outdoor temperature and humidity readings, and warns if a storm is coming your way.

Nowe Meet OnHub, a new router from Google that’s built for all the ways you Wi-Fi.

As we rely on wifi more and more..Phones, tablets, and computers, TV boxes, home security systems, thermostats, coffeemakers, and home-automation products, need I continue?..the need for a solid wireless solution in the home is key.

One initial problem with OnHub is that for effectiveness, you will need to place this device in the center of your home. Now how many Xfinity or ATT techs install your gateway in the center of your house? Another limitation is that it only has one networking port.

Now, yahoo says, “That said, once you’ve got it set up, you should be happy with the results: This thing blasts Wi-Fi through your home like a fire hose on an anthill.”..and they say the setup is sinch.

Now, Google states it has 13 antennas inside, six each on the 2.4 and 5 gigahertz bands, and one that monitors the hotspot and constantly adjusts to give you the best range and speed. yeah, that’s a lot of internal antennas.

Both networks on both the 2.4GHz (802.11b/g/n) and 5GHz (802.11n/a/ac) frequency bands operate simultaneously. But both networks use the same SSID, and the router decides for you which network each client should use.

For most DIY, that is great, but if you need to troubleshoot wireless signal interference, the lack of advanced features may leave you frustrated.

Setup

Yep, just a phone or a tablet. Some reports state that when setting up via Apple iOS device, things aren’t so easy. The setup may be straight forward and Google does a good job of giving the end user useful information during the app setup, like informing you that your existing routers wireless will need to be turned off. Ok, that’s great!…how many of you know how to login to your gateway / router and disable the wireless? Right!

All Geek Talk Aside

The OnHub is also well positioned for the future. It’s got all kinds of stuff inside that hasn’t even been turned on yet, like Bluetooth and Zigbee (a common home-automation standard). There’s a USB jack that doesn’t do anything yet, too. Google also says it will constantly upgrade your router remotely…interesting. Can you hear an Echo

Two major players in the home theater and smart home market are joining forces to streamline integration among products, while increasing options for builders and integrators.

Control4 and Denon have been in the forefront of home theater – audio and smart home control for years and now they have entered a partnership to open Denon’s smart product line to Control4’s dealers, meaning builders can get all their automation and entertainment tech in one spot.

According to the press release, Denon has been involved in Control4’s Driver Certification Program, which aims to solve installation issues by simplifying integrations between devices.

Control 4 and Denon enter partnership to streamline integration.

Denon is not the only entertainment company in partnership with a major automation platform. Leviton and Niles both integrate easily with major automation platforms like Control4 and Elan in price ranges lower than Denon’s product line.

This new partnership between Denon and Control4 could possibly be a signal that the AV and smart home control market is finally trying to make interoperability much better for both the integrator and the end user.

Digital Living’s take is that we may see more high profile AV and control companies enter into similar agreements…although making it all work, every time, is the key for the integrator and ultimately the customer.c

The first Apple HomeKit compatible devices were released early June to the excited masses but controlling those devices may not be as simple as saying “Hey Siri.”

According to to TechHomeBuidler.com in order to utilize the entire HomeKit feature set you will need an Apple TV. Some users are  also experiencing trouble setting up voice control through Apple TV.

While you’re inside the home, Siri voice control works through the home Wi-Fi, but when you’re away, you need to have an Apple TV set top box to control your HomeKit devices.

Most of the devices released so far, including Lutron’s Caseta bridge, have their own smart phone apps, but that won’t allow homeowners to use voice control while their away.

You may have to spend some time with Apple tech support to get HomeKit to work properly.

Last week, Lutron was the first to release a HomeKit-enabled device, the lighting company was followed quickly by Insteon, ecobee , Elgato, and iHome.
