Thanks to Democrats, Wednesday the Senate voted to restore the Net neutrality policies that were previously repealed by the FCC. Only three Republicans, Susan Collins (R-Maine), John Kennedy (R-LA) and Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) broke rank in the Senate’s 52-47 vote.

Senate Democrats had pushed for a vote to enact the Congressional Review Act, or CRA, to halt the Federal Communications Commission’s rollback of Obama-era rules governing the open internet. Well, they got the vote Wednesday, and it went their way.

New FCC Hurdles
The FCC now has some new roadblocks to abolish the rules.

How did your senator vote on the successful last-ditch effort to maintain net neutrality? Find out below. Senate votes to restore net neutrality: Here’s how every senator voted

Home Burglary Stats

1. Many Burglaries Take Place During the Middle of the Day

Burglaries represent crimes of opportunity so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that thieves prefer to target homes between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. The reason for this is that people are at work or school, lessening the chance of witnesses seeing the burglar.

Here are the best ways to stop a burglar:

Surveillance Cameras, Smart Door Locks, Automated Lighting, and More

2. Thieves Target Homes Without

Burglars look for homes without lawn signs..period. They assess risk and if they don’t see cameras or a lawn sign, they see opportunity!!

3. The Majority of Thieves Live Within Two Miles of the Crime

Unfortunately, thieves study you and if you have some deterrents they may think twice.

Fluorescent lights, computer screens, neon signs—there is certainly a lot of peripheral light in our lives. And to your circadian rhythms, that light can read like a lot of excess noise.

Using Light Warmth to Wind Down at Night

Scientists who study light’s effects on neurology have noticed one clear through line: cool, white light seems to make the mind more active and productive, while soft, warm light induces melatonin, a precursor to sleep. Color ‘temperature,’ in essence, the amount of blue (‘cool’) or yellow (‘warm’) wavelengths in a light source has been shown to have a definite effect on our sleep—and by extension, our overall health. In fact, Harvard research linked lower melatonin to Type 2 diabetes.

A new version of HDMI is coming soon, and there are some big changes — including support for resolutions up to 10K as well as a new cable. Here’s the skinny on fatter AV bandwidth.

OK, let’s get this done up front. Yes, there’s a new cable with HDMI 2.1, but you don’t need to upgrade. At least not yet.

HDMI 2.1 brings new features and a lot more bandwidth to the venerable cable and connection. HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) is the main audio/video connection for TVs, Blu-ray players, game consoles, video streamers, sound bars, computers and more. It carries both video and audio in one cable, allows digital encryption, and generally delivers perfect video and audio quality without any degradation.

Today’s devices mostly use HDMI version 2.0, but in 2018, many will likely transition to version 2.1. How does that affect you? Not much. You can’t upgrade your current TV to 2.1 spec, but in reality, you won’t need to. This update is quite forward-thinking and takes into account formats and resolutions that won’t be widely available for years.

We all want to do our part to help the environment, but sometimes our budgets simply don’t allow it. Here are some eco-friendly changes you can make around your home that won’t break the bank.

Smart Thermostats

Have you ever realized how crazy it is to leave the heat on after you vacate the house? That’s a bit like our ancestors cutting down all the neighborhood trees to heat an empty cave. Most people have access to technology that allows them to program thermostats to shut off at certain times of day and therefore reduce energy waste. But the traditional programmable thermostat can only do so much.

The Nest, by contrast, is a smart thermostat capable of learning your behavior and modifying its settings accordingly.5 If you come home from work and typically adjust your thermostat to 70 degrees Fahrenheit and then dial it down to 65 degrees at bedtime, the Nest eventually catches on and makes the change for you. And when you leave the house, it automatically turns itself down.

It has other impressive features too. For example, when the Nest “sees” you approaching, it automatically illuminates itself so the screen is easier to read. It can also be controlled remotely so you can adjust the temperature of your home via a cellphone or laptop.

The Nest, which was designed by former Apple engineers and is owned by Google, is a fairly pricey device at $250. But it’s absolutely worth the investment. And if you think you have insufficient expertise to replace an existing thermostat, the company offers straightforward installation tutorials that should boost your confidence.6

For a little bit less money (and, dare we say, style), there are several other smart thermostats on the market. Honeywell’s Wi-Fi Smart Thermostat, for example, won’t learn your temperature habits, but if you have different temperature preferences for different times of the day, it allows you to program them down to the hour for up to seven days.7 It has a user-friendly screen, is easy to set up, and features the kind of built-in flexibility most homeowners appreciate. Plus, this device acts as a small weather station that provides indoor and outdoor temperature and humidity readings, and warns if a storm is coming your way.
